Police probe man's claim he shot officer in Allah's name

Jan 09, 2016, 23:55

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney wasted no time Friday in deflecting blame from Islam in the shooting of one of his city's police officers despite the suspect's own confession. "According to him, he believed that the police defend laws that are contrary to the teachings of the Koran". "I pledge my allegiance to the Islamic State and that's why I did what I did".

Archer told investigators, "I follow Allah". However, he was not on a terror watch list.

Ross said the attacker told authorities he was pledging allegiance to ISIL, the terrorist group that controls parts of Iraq and Syria.

The gun used in the attack was a stolen police firearm from October, 2013.

"We know it was stolen, how many hands it may have passed through in the last couple of years, we do not know", Ross said. Hartnett was driving in a marked cruiser through the intersection of 60th and Spruce Streets in West Philadelphia when he received the 3 bullet impacts. The suspect fired at least 13 times, emptying the 9mm handgun he was shooting Ross said.

Of the 11 shots or more the gunman fired, three hit Hartnett in the left arm, shattering his elbow, piercing the major artery and tearing through nerves. The gunman was apprehended by other officers, Ross said.

He also called the incident "absolutely amazing" that Harnett survived. "People that was standing outside, people ran out the bar, we hit the floor, we was crying", Jones said.

"We've already established why he believes he did it, and that's probably enough", Ross said. "It's fantastic he's alive". Hartnett was heard saying.

Hartnett served in the Coast Guard and has been on the Philadelphia force for four years.

Hartnett was taken into surgery early Friday at Presbyterian hospital and was expected to make a full recovery. The homicide unit talked to him. "He's an excellent person", Robert Hartnett said. He previously worked for the East Lansdowne Police Department. He went from the Coast Guard to the police academy. "He's OK", Ross said. It will be a tough road.

"He's a tough guy", he said.

Prosecutors charged Edward Archer, 30, of attempted murder, along with several related charges, including aggravated assault, assault of a law enforcement officer, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, and other weapons charges.

Reuters reported that police said there was no evidence as of yet as to whether the shooter had worked with anyone else.
