Philadelphia police: Officer shot while in police cruiser

Jan 09, 2016, 23:49

A Philadelphia police officer was shot and seriously wounded by an assailant who said he had acted in the name of Islam, authorities said Friday.

The Imam of a Philadelphia mosque Friday night is condemning a shooting attack on a police officer by a man investigators say claims he was inspired by the Islamic State.

A gunman who allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS when he fired at least 11 times at a Philadelphia police officer was charged Saturday with attempted murder, among other related charges, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office said.

According to local reports, Archer has offered a full confession and said he carried out the shooting in the name of Islam.

"He stated that he pledges his allegiance to Islamic State... and that is the reason he was called upon to do this", homicide police Captain James Clark told a news conference.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said the weapon used to wound Officer Jesse Hartnett was a police 9 mm semi-automatic pistol stolen in 2013 from an officer's home.

Still-frame pictures broadcast on national television Friday showed the suspect approaching Hartnett's vehicle at an intersection, going directly up to the officer's window, and a short time later running away.

However, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said that he did not believe that Islam or the teaching of Islam had anything to do with the attack.

The shooter in the attack is seen wearing a long white robe over dark trousers on surveillance video, but Ross said he did not know if it was Muslim garb.

"This guy tried to execute the officer", Ross said at a late-night briefing.

At least one police department in Berks County is taking steps in response to the police ambush in Philadelphia. "I'm just hesitant to jump to conclusions one way or the other." .

"Shots fired!... I'm bleeding heavily!" the officer shouts in a recording of his radio call for backup. Ross added, "He doesn't appear to be a stupid individual, just an extremely violent one".

A 30-year-old man, who has not been identified, was arrested after the incident on January 7. He was later captured, treated at the hospital and taken to police headquarters, officials said.

Archer's mother, Valerie Holliday, told The Philadelphia Inquirer he has been hearing voices recently and that family asked him to get help.
