Obama says he'll attend Detroit auto show later this month

Cobo center is filling up with all of the shiny new cars and trucks for the North American International Auto Show.

In what will be his first visit to the auto show in Detroit as president, the White House announced President Barack Obama will be making a trip to the North American International Auto Show on January 20.

The industry was in danger of collapse when Obama took office in 2009, but reported a record sales year in 2015. "Because I believe that every American should be proud of what our most iconic industry has done".

While lots of dignitaries and industry officials typically take in the show during its first week - several members of Michigan's congressional delegation, for instance, will visit on Monday - Obama is coming during the second week typically reserved for the public.

"Because today, the American auto industry is back". We've cut the Detroit-area unemployment rate by more than half.

The Obama administration agreed to prop up the automakers - provided they were steered through bankruptcy to restructure their operations - even though it was not popular nationwide.

The White House announcement hinted the president may make other stops in Detroit but said details would be provided later. This will be his first visit ever to the NAIAS.

In February 2012, the President endorsed the gas-electric Chevrolet Volt, saying he planned to buy the extended-range electric vehicle upon leaving office.

"Plants were closing. Hundreds of thousands of workers were getting laid off... another one million Americans would have lost their jobs", he said.
