Dolphins schedule second interview with Bears OC Adam Gase

Jan 09, 2016, 23:04

The Dolphins are finalizing a deal to hire Adam Gase, the 37-year-old offensive coordinator of the Bears, as its next coach, according to a team source.

The Miami Dolphins are set to make their pitch to him Thursday, and the New York Giants have requested an interview, too, per reports.

On the West Coast, the San Francisco 49ers have an interest in Anthony Lynn, who was an assistant head coach and running backs coach with the Buffalo Bills this year, per Schrager. He also interviewed this year with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns for their head coaching jobs. After interviewing for a number of head coaching jobs, Gase eventually wound up as one of the last remaining coaches on the market, and he tagged along with John Fox to Chicago to be the offensive coordinator for another job. He has no head coaching experience but has been a target of coaching searches for at least three years.

In addition to setting National Football League team records, Gase also helped quarterback Peyton Manning have the most prolific season of any quarterback in National Football League history. Both are "hot coordinators" and on many organization's radars right now as potential future head coaches. In Cutler's only season with Gase and Loggains, he posted a single-season career-best 92.3 passer rating.

Regardless of whether a second interview was or will be scheduled, it does sound as though a second interview with Gase will take place.

The person provided the update on negotiations to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no agreement has been reached with the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator.

But from the start, there was a buzz about Gase. That may happen again, so I'm certainly glad to share my thoughts, I mean it's pretty well documented my thoughts on him because I don't think he needs me to stand up here and campaign for him. Gase is a young coach who has rocketed to the top of coaching candidate lists, but how did he get there?

Miami interviewed seven candidates but Gase was the only one who the team gave a second interview.

Part of the reason Lurie and his search committee are being so proactive is exactly what Schefter alluded to on the radio this morning; they don't want to wait and lose Gase to another team, especially one in their own division... "He'll be an exceptional head coach, he's a motivator, he's very, very good strategically, technically in terms of football".

In 2014, the head coaching carousel was spinning as rapidly as it ever has, and it seemed Gase leaving Denver - or perhaps becoming their new head coach - was a near certainty.
