Woman who served as surrogate gives birth to granddaughter

A 53-year-old Texas woman has successfully given birth to her granddaughter in an act of surrogacy for her 33-year-old daughter, after she was unable to carry a child to full term. After many heartbreaks, Kelley's mom stepped in to provide what Kelley says is, "the best gift...for a lifetime".

According to a release from the Medical Center of Plano, Tracey Thompson offered to carry her granddaughter for her daughter, 28-year-old Kelley McKissack.

Kelley McKissack and her husband tried for three years to have a baby. The couple tried various infertility treatments, but were unsuccessful. However, the final round of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) did leave the couple with four remaining embryos.

The baby girl was given the name Kelcey, a combination of the names of her mother and grandmother, Tracey and Kelley. Grandmother and child are doing well.

Dr. Joseph Leveno, an OB/GYN on staff at The Medical Center of Plano, said: 'It takes a mountain of a woman, and I think that's what Tracey is as far as her spirit and her strength'.

The family says they plan to have Kelcey call Thompson the traditional "Grandma", and they plan to tell her everything she wants to know about the special way she came into the world. "The second trimester was great", she said.

'It's been many years since I was pregnant, ' said Thompson. The first and third were really tough'. The baby's heart rate started dropping dangerously low and Thompson had to be rushed for a C-section.

McKissack was in the delivery room with her mom Wednesday, a moment she says she will never forget.

'She's attractive, she's just flawless, ' added McKissack.
