Is a big name signing a priority for Arsenal?

Knowing what we all do about Arsene Wenger, there's little doubt that he's scouring the planet to find Arsenal some new talent that he can work his magic on and turn into a world class player.

Last season he found us Bacary Sagna and Eduardo, the year before that it was Tomas Rosicky, Denilson and Alexandre Song, while three years ago it was Emmanuel Adebayor, Abou Diaby, Alexander Hleb and Theo Walcott.

At the moment, the new players coming in include Aaron Ramsey, Luke Freeman and, of course, Carlos Vela who should hopefully begin his Arsenal career in the pre-season friendlies.

But after another trophyless season, us fans are needing a bit of a shot in the arm and while I'm not saying that Le Gaffer's brand of football is anything but the best, adding an established world star surely cannot be a bad idea, either for the team or commercially. Otherwise we run the risk of permanently being a team in transition and if that is the case - indeed, if we have another season without silverware - then I can foresee a few more players becoming unsettled and seeking pastures new.

What do you reckon? Should us fans be demanding a big name signing? Or should we be content with relatively unknown players being the only players to come to the club? Perhaps you have a superstar in mind as a potential Gunner. Share your thoughts here

I agree we need a established star - just like in 2001/02 when he signed Campbell. 97/98 Overmars. It will not only add valuable experience to the club but also give the team a lift

Also I'd like a new top class keeper - Almunia maybe good but he is not world class.

Let us be clear and realistic. established name? defined by who? Unless it has passed my observation Wenger is still the gaffer and whoever comes in has to be to his satisfaction and as long as he says the player is working then that is all there is to it. Remember Adebayor's in his first games- a different specie from the one who tormented defenders last season. Sagna's performance does not need to comment on while Eduardo was up to a lot of good before he was upended by an Englishman's "dogged defending" to borrow some expressions from pundits on MOTD.

It should also be remembered that last season we did very well to be 5 points from winning EPL having had our top 3 players out injured. I dont think Man U could have done as well with Rooney, Carrick and any other one of their top players out injured. PATIENCE ladies and gentlemen. Next year we may nick it.

Big stars don't make a diffrence. Look at Berca. With big names no trouphy. The only thing Arsene Wenger need to do is to buy new and mature players for the team and not leave any player now in the club to leave. Arsene Wenger plz go ahead to buy all those u've shown intrest for.

Buy santa cruz and sell ade

Top Class Player? you don't get immediate result by signing big player, especially when he's not playing on Premier League right now. I think Wenger knows which player he should buy. For me, it's good to sign a player that suit to our style of play, have a good skill, good behaviour. In position, it's important if we could add center defender or defensive midfielder, that's the area that Arsenal really need at the moment beside new good goalkeeper. But, if you ask me do we need to sign Big Name player, i don't think it's necessary, the important is the player that we sign can handle big pressure, can adapt well with English game, also good skill and behaviour.

I think buying a big name striker - especially if we let Ade go - is a must. Lurchio makes a good point about the momentum it gives the team. A couple of big names in place and we will start the season full of confidence

Yes! Sign Roque Santacruz!

Thanks for the input Mike, but Theo signed for Arsenal three seasons ago - in January 2006, therefore during the 05-06 season. For the record, he was signed one week after Wenger landed Adebayor and Diaby.

The best player that Arsenal could get this summer would be a top quality, experienced defensive midfielder. Someone to sit behind Cesc and protect the back four.

Someone like Senna. If we could find someone who did exactly the same job as Senna we'd be so much stronger.

Flamini was good because he was tireless and he always harried and tackled the opposition when they were in possession. He wasn't the most tactically aware nor was he very creative but he worked twice as hard as anyone else which made the difference.

If Wenger can find a Senna clone we will be complete.

We all need to be realistic for this one time and know we need atleast two big name signings, we play good football but for how long will we go without even a cup of coffee in our cabinet. Its really frustrating to go for several seasons without any silverware, please let fortify our squad.

Dont we have a Senna clone? not very fast? over 30? experienced? Gilberto Silva ring any bells..

asrene tries to run arsenal ethicaly and financialy correct with balance. its the way of the samuari.he doesnt want to give in to the money men by becoming one.he doesnt want to play ball, thats why we are held back. the money men know that if allclubs were to be run like arsenal the money men would find it hard to hold position. arsenal are on course. at newcastle last season away we had 9 fisrt team players out. african nations eduardo broken leg. all these problems we still finished 4 points behind man u 2 behind chelski and got far in all competions. 7-0 against slavia prague plus dodgy refs.arsenal fans who cant see have no vision for faith.arsenal are NUMBER ONE.for them to be that we have to believe that were number one too. so all this in house fighting is what the media want. we have got to stick together just like the we are all arsenal. we need to be fighting in the same direction with the same breath and the same heartbeat. i u want to enlighten your self read [football is] and type in arsenal and read the blogs.look how much money the big teams have spent plus having the media backing and still arsenal still play the best plus giving unknowns the chance to become something of themselves. the lost then found from exil to henry

We need a santa cruz and get rid of ade , buy a yaya toure and a central defender like mexes..... then get the champions league

Posted by: OPIRO | July 3, 2008 7:05 PM

Yes 2 in defensive areas 1 cb and 1 defensive midfielder. Santa cruz to replace ade.

Posted by: goonerc | July 3, 2008 10:22 PM

i think this year denilson deserve to play along with fabregas in midfield...why we need senna, may be he's experience enough, but we need more tireless (and younger) holding midfielder ....and how about defender player? i think gallas not play in peak performance last season
