Is Arsene Wenger contemplating quitting Arsenal?

It's an old cliche that no man is bigger than Arsenal Football Club, but when it comes to manager Arsene Wenger, we have an all too obvious exception.

Cue me spluttering half my breakfast onto the keyboard this morning when I spot a headline suggesting that the clock may be ticking on Le Gaffer's remaining time in north London, with French rag Le Parisien claiming that Wenger could be on his way to Paris Saint Germain.

Now before any of you start shaking your head and muttering about the nonsensical French media, there could be some truth to this rumour, as Le Parisien was merely reporting the dawn of a new era for PSG after the club's president, Sebastien Bazin and new chairman Charles Villeneuve met Arsene to discuss plans for the future.

According to Le Parisien, Le Boss is going to play a major role in the restructuring of PSG, which could lead to him becoming the club's new manager as early as next year.

As we all know, Wenger has never broken a contract and his current deal at Arsenal does not expire until the 2010-11 season, so unless the Gunners' board sacks him, there's not much chance he'll be leaving us soon, but long term it could be entirely different...

The fact that PSG were already looking to secure Arsenal's chief scout Gilles Grimandi hints that the two clubs could be set to embark on some kind of partnership agreement, similar to what we already have in place with Beveren in Belgium and Salamanca in Spain, among others.

Playing down any suggestion that he is considering a return to his homeland, Wenger commented that he is under contract until 2011. Worryingly he added, "Then we will see."

For many Gooners, contemplating a future without Wenger at the helm is, well, unthinkable, but it's inevitable that one of these days he will either decide he needs a new challenge or retire gracefully from the game. Hopefully though he'll decide to remain at Arsenal by taking a step upstairs to the boardroom and perhaps appointing his own successor.

So the can of worms I am opening for you today is a complex one indeed - when the sad day comes and Arsene Wenger is no longer Arsenal boss, who would you like to see replacing Le Professor in the manager's chair? Share your thoughts here using our comments section below.
