Your vote: Cesc Fabregas should captain Arsenal next season

Earlier this week I asked you who you would like to see as the Gunners' skipper and in the short time that you've had to vote, it resulted in Arsenal Pies' biggest ever online poll.

Arsene Wenger has hinted that it might be time to rethink his choice of skipper by stating that he will review the position after the season ends, but with incumbent captain William Gallas under scrutiny for his leadership skills, it would seem that the vast majority of you want someone new.

Only 11% of you voted for Gallas, which shows just what a fickle lot us football fans can be. Had Arsenal still been in the reckoning for the Premier League title and Champions League crown, then I'm guessing that we'd all be applauding Gallas and the thought of having a new skipper next season would be the furthest from our minds.

However, as it is, you lot have voted for Cesc Fabregas to replace Gallas as club captain next year, with the Spanish superstar amassing 34% of the vote. If Wenger follows your advice, then Fab 4 could become Arsenal's youngest ever captain...

Legendary skipper Tony Adams currently holds that distinction, as he stepped into the role on January 1st, 1988 when he was aged just 21 years and 82 days.

Fabregas turns 21 on May 4th meaning that if he was to break Adams' record, he would have to be named as skipper before July 25th. But given that Arsenal's first pre-season friendly is against Barnet on July 19th, I reckon we'll all know who next season's skipper is going to be before then.

Elsewhere in our poll, Kolo Toure came runner up, with a 26% share of the votes, while third was Mathieu Flamini with 23%. Should the Flamster be given the armband, then I reckon it would go a long way in persuading him to stay at Arsenal, but judging by some of the comments by club chairman Peter Hill-Wood yesterday, it seems as if Flamini is all but gone, with a deal in place to go to his boyhood heroes, Juventus.

Hopefully we won't have to wait too long until Le Gaffer announces who our captain is going to be next season; he's not likely to make a statement during the current campaign, but I'd imagine that if he is going to strip Gallas of the armband, he'll say something during the Euro 2008 tournament so that the news gets buried away in the sports sections.

Personally I think he'll keep the faith with Gallas, but when I recall the leadership of our double winning skippers, Tony Adams and Frank McLintock, or Patrick Vieira, who helped create a real spirit of togetherness among his team mates, then Gallas just doesn't give me with that same sense of inspiration, so I hope a change is on the horizon.

Give the #10 and the armband to ROSICKY!!! He is the captain of the Czech Rep and had worn it on occasion at Dortmund. The problem with Rosicky (other than injuries) is that he plays on the wing. I believe a captain needs to manage his team from the middle. The most sensible choice should be Toure as he could manage from the back. Fabregas will have his time as captain in the future. We need an experienced captain who will lead by example. Gallas needs to retire from the EPL and go play elsewhere.
