Should Arsenal break transfer record for Gareth Barry?

According to various newspaper reports, Arsene Wenger is considering parting with £15 million to sign Gareth Barry as a potential replacement for Mathieu Flamini.

Flamini has until Wednesday to make up his mind on whether he will sign a contract extension at Arsenal, or leave for Italy at the end of the season and the sounds coming out of Emirates Stadium are that the Flamster has all but left the club.

Cue the rumours that Wenger is set to break Arsenal's transfer record by submitting a £15 million bid for Aston Villa skipper Barry.

Personally, I can't see Wenger parting with that much cash for Barry, even though I can see he might be a good replacement for Flamini. But if Wenger is even contemplating spending a fraction of that £15 million on signing a defensive midfielder, I just can't understand why he wouldn't use it as a signing-on bonus to keep Flamini at the club...

Reports this morning also suggest that Mathieu has agreed a deal to go to AC Milan. I'm still hoping against hope that he'll remain a Gunner and until I see the club confirming that he's left, I won't believe any of the rumours, but my initial optimism has disappeared.

But what do you lot think of the Gareth Barry speculation? Do you think he'd be a good addition to the Arsenal first team? And do you think he's worth the money? Or do you think Wenger will unearth another cut-price bargain we've never heard of and mould him into a midfield general? Share your thoughts here.

Since the first day Flamster's contract issue came up, I knew in my heart it was gonna come to this. What I dont understand is why we rather get a new guy for any amount than offer an improved contract to a tried & trusted player. Personally, I think our wage structure shld be revised, I totally support not overpaying players but I cant help but think, we dnt spend a lot on transfers for a big club so why cant we offer better contracts to players that have spent quite a while playing for us.

On the other side, the kind of clubs requesting the flamsters services are the clubs you never want 2 hear want your players. I have a feeling that apart from the money these clubs are offering, the thought of playin 4 a club like milan will seriously tempt even the most loyal of players. Lets not also forget what we did to the kid in the champs lge final, replacing him with a disloyal player after he had done the hard work!

I like barry as a player but wld prefer keeping the flamster. Paying 15 mil for a 27 year old just isnt the arsenal we all knw!

I couldn’t agree more with you Goonerkid, it seems silly to break the bank for someone when he have a player of equal or even better ability on our books already. If Flamini doesn’t want to stay though I don’t want a player at the club who is going to upset the dressing room. Fair play to the lad because if he wants to go off and play in another country for the likes of Milan then do it, because in the end you can only do what makes you happy. Right enough of this feelings rubbish, back to football.

I must urge Wenger to sign Flamini because without him this season we would have been lost. While Fabregas has taken all the plaudits without Flamini Cesc wouldn’t have had the freedom he has been given to create so many opportunities for our boy’s. In a perfect world I’d like to have Barry and Flamini because I am a bigger admirer of the Villa man and he would slip in perfectly. But this isn’t a perfect, demonstrated by our capitulation this season, and as such I feel that if Flamini does decide to leave Wenger HAS to buy and Barry would be a perfect replacement, I just don’t see him coming to our club, but I do see him in a red shirt this season, sadly just a Liverpool one.

Let him go, the last thing we need is another Henry situation where his time at the club is now soured by those ridiculous last 2 seasons where he lost us the CL title and hurt our PL campaigns.

As for Gareth Barry, yes I rate him but I hope he costs less than £15m, partly because I don't think he's worthy of being our most expensive signing and partly because he doesn't deserve the pressure having that mantle would bring.

my concern is that wenger must keep flamini and buy that guy from villa becouse flamini can play defensive , forward and midfield which is his position wenger please keep the guy !

Well, Flamini's gone and Hleb looks to be following him to the other San Siro side !!!!....On another note i feel i need to address the Midfield options now. Gareth Barry would make a good aquisition to any team at the moment but he does not fit into Arsenal's policy of bringing in players and having them adapt to Wenger's style of football. I can't help but think that we (Gooners) are all being conned into believing Barry is better than he actually is. Is he really as good as people think or has he been made to look better by playing in a sub-standard England Midfield where let's face it competition is not the highest for places.....Several reports suggest Wenger is looking at Samir Nasry and Jean Makoun for Hleb and Flamini respectively. These are 2 players that although are not English would fit straight into the philosophy of Arsenal so rumour rating is quite high for me on these guys. On a seperate note..Please,Please,Please Wenger sign Micah Richards Michael Johnson from Man City. They are ripe for the taking...Go on break the bank for these 2 not Barry.

my name is lloyd john miles im a huge arsenal fan my worst hates are the newcastle united but ive heard speculation about obafemi martins boarding ship to the emirates which is a great idea with his pace and goals could rele boast our push for honours next season which we will succeed. also gareth barry will be a great signing as he plays in the premiership already and so many times u buy foreign players and they cant adapt to the english game and also he has showed it for england so defiantly a great buy on arsenals behalf if we get him also we need another attacking midfielder which wenger has bn looking at such as ben arfa from lyon. and mayb we could get yaya toure to do the same job as patrick viera which i beleive at this present time is the only person to do that job. lloyd john miles.
