Poll: Who should be Arsenal's captain next season?

Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is still to make a decision on whether William Gallas will retain the Arsenal captaincy next season, so I thought I'd give you lot a say in who our skipper should be.

I've ruled out Gilberto through age, Jens Lehmann through lunacy and the likes of Robin van Persie and Tomas Rosicky because they are injury prone, so my short list is down to just six players, but as with all polls that are worth their merit, I've left an 'Other' key for anyone else you want to nominate.

For the record, I have to say that Le Gaffer's decision to appoint Gallas as captain was inspired. A Chelski supporting friend of mine points out that whinging Willie needs to feel like he's the centre of attention, so to make him the boss on the pitch was a great move by Wenger and I believe he's got the best out of Gallas as a defender as a result.

Where I feel the experiment has gone wrong is that Gallas does not have the right mentality to be an Arsenal captain. He might be able to lead the defence, but his ridiculous antics at the end of the Birmingham game back in February show that he's not the right man to be the skipper when the chips are down...

If Wenger does strip of Gallas or the armband, then I believe it would be difficult for Willie's ego to handle that public vote of no confidence, meaning a transfer request could follow, so for that reason I think he'll remain as skipper.

Gallas is reportedly the highest paid player at Arsenal and that in itself is wrong, so Wenger could seize the opportunity to solve that problem by awarding the captaincy to a younger player.

One major contender for Arsenal captain is Mathieu Flamini and that could prove a decisive lure into retaining the midfield maestro's services with his contract now expired.

Another favourite for the role would be playmaker Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard turns 21 next month and although that's very young, he'd be the same age as Tony Adams was when he became club captain. If Cesc could emulate Adams and remain skipper for the next 14 years, then I certainly wouldn't complain.

Many people believe that defenders make the best captains, so the next in my list is Arsenal's current longest serving player, Kolo Toure. Our number 5 is now in his seventh year under Arsene Wenger and is the team's vice captain, which should make him favourite to replace Gallas if Wenger were to make that call.

My final duo might suprise some of you, but Emmanuel Adebayor's work ethic is impressive and I think that he might be one of those players who could thrive when given the responsibility to lead his team mates. I see him as more of a vice captain for now though.

And lastly, how about Alexander Hleb? The midfielder has had an outstanding season and as a result is being linked with a big money move away from Arsenal. Like Flamini, the lure of the captaincy might prove an important factor in him staying at the club and it shouldn't be forgotten that unlike the others on my short list - including Gallas - Hleb is the only one who has the honour of captaining his country.

So vote here for who you'd like to see as the Gunners' skipper next season. If you've got an argument to back up your choice, post it in our comments section. Or if there's someone you think I've missed out, let me know.

The more I think about it the more it makes sense to put the armband on Arsenal's Iron-man, Gael Clichy. He should at least be on this list.

I think arsenals captaincy should be keep well away from cesc, i dont think he couldnt handle it but the pressure would get to him being arsenals best/well known player i think the captaincy would push him over the edge. I agree with wokich i think it should be clichy. The most consistent and captained the teams in preseason
