Do you agree with Lee Dixon that Arsenal need a new captain?

Former Arsenal full back Lee Dixon has heavily criticised incumbent club captain William Gallas and is calling for Arsene Wenger to promote someone else to skipper.

Dixon's opinions have been picked up by several national newspapers, as he goes as far as to say that Gallas should take responsibility for the club's sudden slide in form. Dixon also points to the game with Birmingham, where Eduardo suffered his horrific broken leg and Arsenal conceded a last minute penalty, as the moment that Gallas lost the respect of his team mates.

Referring to the Gunners' defeat at the hands of Manchester United on Sunday, Dixon said, "When the tide turns and it starts to get hard, you need a leader - and William Gallas is not what I call a leader. He can play well defensively but you need him to be at his best when the team is under pressure - and once again he wasn't.

"When it got back to 1-1, Arsenal were suddenly under the cosh and that's when you need your captain to stand up and be counted. But Gallas didn't speak to anybody. He just walked back to his position at set-pieces and didn't say a word. He is supposed to be the captain. He needs to help the team and especially the younger players. He should have been organising things but he didn't."

I don't think for a minute that Wenger will pay any attention to Dixon, unless of course he has plans to let Gallas leave the club, but Dixon does make some valid points about Gallas's leadership qualities...

Dixon points to Arsenal winning just two of our last 13 games and claims the team's decline began with the skipper's infantile behaviour at Birmingham on February 23rd, where the Gunners tossed away two points thanks to an injury time penalty.

"Instead of doing what he should have been doing, Gallas walked up the pitch and into the other half, where he stood on his own. What could he do from there? Nothing," blasted Dixon..

"Players were looking at the captain and asking 'What is he doing?' He wasn't acting like a leader and hasn't done for much of the season. Real captains cannot let their emotions take over, never ever, as they should always be thinking of their team-mates and leading by example. Gallas doesn't appear capable of doing that."

If Wenger were to strip Gallas of the captain's armband, then the 30-year-old would doubtless ask for a transfer, as I couldn't see his ego taking such a public battering. For that reason, I can't see Wenger making such a move but hypothetically it would be good to hear from you lot who ou think our next captain should be.

Should Wenger offer the responsibility to someone like Mathieu Flamini to keep him at the club? Or perhaps Kolo Toure should be rewarded for his loyalty and leadership? Maybe making Cesc Fabregas skipper would help him develop his game. Or should Wenger use the lure of the captaincy to entice a global superstar to Arsenal? Share your thoughts on the subject here.

New Lee Dixon is clearly right! Fabregas should be able now to captain the squad. Au revoir Gallas!

It's hard for me to take Gallas serious...Although published in The Sun, it is clear Gallas lives in his own world.

Definitely need a new captain, why Wenger made Mister Sulky captain in the first place baffles me! Toure would be an excellent captain, as would Gilberto, but I think it's too late for him.

I lost a ton of respect for him after his antics in the birmingham match. the captain should be the last bloke having a falling down moment like that.

bloke is a good defender, but a liability with the armband.

although kolo would be a good pick for the job, fab would work too, both guys always give it 100%, i think flam should get the gig. the guy has been solid as a rock all season and his presence in the team has a calming and solidifying effect.
