Could Arsene Wenger be set to break Arsenal's transfer record?

It looks increasingly likely that Arsene Wenger could be about to break the habits of a lifetime by bringing in a recognisable name to Arsenal Football Club.

Le Gaffer has come in for some stinging criticism in the past few days for his refusal to strengthen his squad with experienced players during the January transfer window and while I'm as frustrated as the rest of you about the club's failure to win silverware this season, I still back Arsene's long-term plan to build the squad organically.

That said, I'm also sure he needs to bring in new faces in the summer and experienced players should be top of his list, as even he admits that a lack of maturity let down the Gunners at key moments this season.

And the good news for us Gooners is that he won't flinch from spending big if it means the right kind of player joining the club, even though some big money signings haven't worked out in the past.

"The money [we have paid out] is not comparable to what other teams have spent on players," says Wenger. "For example with [Jose Antonio] Reyes we got a big part back and for [Francis] Jeffers a little part back. If we have the money and I am convinced it is worth it, we will do it."

So let's help Arsene out. He's ruled out a move for Ronaldinho, but I'm sure you lot can come up with a few suggestions on who Arsenal should sign. Share your thoughts on your transfer target wish list here.

MESSI WANTS TO PLAY FOR A BIG TEAM THAT WINS THINGS.

SPURS HAVE WON MORE THAN YOU LOSERS!!!

Posted by: HAHA | April 15, 2008 4:38 PM

Gomes (or Sebastian Frey)

Micah Richards (I Wish....), but more likely, a spanish center back, who can provide cover on the right.

.... You know who I would just love to see? Diego Capel, Robinho, zdravko kuzmanovic (fiorintina) OR one of bayern's hitmen (Sebastien Schweinsteiger or Podolski). That is just me.

I think the lads did a good job this season even though it came apart towards the end. I think the team and Mr.Wenger learned alot from it and next season will be better and the trophy cabinet will have something to show for it. Bigger, better, faster, stronger will be the order of the day. We missed Rosicky hugely and Sagna and Eduardo in the last few weeks. Bring in Van Der Vaart from Hamburg and a decent centre-back and let Senderos go. Bendtner will continue to improve and double his tally next season at least. he is still only 19 after all. Come On the Arsenal!!

Posted by: Iceman10 | April 15, 2008 6:46 PM

Florent Malouda - Gunners need a winger, because Hleb needs to play in the middle of the field and Eboue is a disaster. Chelsea's about to have a fire sale and he should be available.

Greg Coupet - Almunia's fine, but if we're spending big money then we should really try and upgrade in goal.

Need speed on the wings, maybe another defender. Eboue, Bendtner, Lehmann and Senderos need to go.

KAKA!!!
CANNAVARO!!!
RAMOS!!!

Posted by: Jim | April 15, 2008 11:44 PM

Was there any thought put into half these names on the list?

Cannavaro - OLD
Coupet - OLD
Owen - just busted
Ledley King - are you SERIOUS

I like the idea of VDV though.

If Ronaldhino goes to AC Milan then their midfield would be pretty crowded so i propose luring either Kaka or Gatusso to arsenal (although its a really long shot). If not, buy benzema and/or Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and/or Robinho to bolster our strike force, ben arfa to take the load off Fabregas, Harry Kewell to give us some width on the left (he's free at the end of the season so why not?), and Phillpe Mexes and/or Micah Richards in defence.
As for Danny M, how much money does spurs get for winning the League cup compared to finishing top four in Premier league and getting a champions league spot? I would rather make a good showing in the EPL and Champions league then win a useless cup that nobody even tries to win.

as far as i know... nobody on this post is one of the most respected and highest paid football managers in the world.
The Arsenal are the only team in England that have never played outside of the top flight. You Gooners, that says something. The management DOES know what their doing. Have faith brothers, enjoys the fantastic football, and the throphies will come.
Form is temporary, class is permanent. Remember this.

we dont need much, just a few extra players across the park for depth more than anything else.

valencia will have a fire sale at the end of the season, david villa and joaquin would be worth a look. the team has gone poorly, but useless management at the club is the reason for it.

both richards or corluka from man city could shore up our defence a bit better.

i'd love to see diego from bremen alongside fab, they would be deadly. we have a decent war chest, so we could compete with chelsea.

also, a note about these spurs fans, they win a measly league cup and they start acting like they have gone an entire season unbeaten. pretty sad really...

Once again u win nothing. Losers
None of these players want to go to a loser club.

The defence needs the most.
Sebastian Frey (Lehmann out)

Christian Zapata (Udinese), 21 (Senderos out)
Philip Mexes (Roma), 26

Yaya Toure (Barca), 24 (Gilberto out)
Karim Benzema (Lyon), 20 (IF Hleb out)

Any sodding left winger (as long as Eboue out)

Nice to see the usual bunch of rubbish being spouted by fans of the serial under-achievers from the lane. When you have got over the shock of actually winning an egg cup maybe you can say something sensible other than make chimp noises.

New players would be a benefit in the short term, I hear a rumour that Berbatov is keen on a red and white jersey, we might even get a smile out of him! Also would like Yaya Toure, Huntelaar, Villa and Micah Richards.

Posted by: Steve Gooner | April 16, 2008 2:15 PM

I think what arsenal need the most is a midfielder who can play on either wing.maybe someone like ben arfa. because eboue really sucks and rosicky is out injured for most of the season all the time.Next we have to tie flamini down to a new contract. sell senderos and gilberto.we need a new striker. and a big name at that. now that david villa has expressed his interest, i dont think wenger should look any further. and villa suits arsenal really well.walcott needs more time and bendtner is simply no good. acquiring english centre backs will prove too expensive. so maybe a french or spanish defender will suit arsenal.if we could swoop for samir nasri, then we wouldnt need ben arfa.and this guy can play anywhere in midfield. like hleb... but lets see what happens. keeping my fingers crossed.

Posted by: Sharat | April 16, 2008 3:41 PM

WE should definitely dip in the kitty for samir nasri(another quality french midfielder!)

Villa would be good but I believe in our 4 strikers, and walcott could end up there soon with more improvement!

Hard to decide on who, but definitely need at least one center back!(Mexes,Cris, etc.)

We need a new goalkepper, Gomes is top quality(a bit mad tho.)

As for sales:

EBOUE is a headless chicken and must go(but wont).

As for SENDEROS arsene's unfaultering belief must be over shadowed by huge mistakes and obvious inability to deal with the big occation!!

Gallas may well be striped of his captincy, which is nessasary, and may ask to leave!!

Tell leahman to leave London for ever!!, nothing but truoble which is a pity because he is a brilliant goalkeeper!!

arsen wenger shud bring in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, messi, ricardo quaresma and maybe david villa cos he wants to come to arsenal..

Posted by: DW | April 20, 2008 11:22 AM

keeper:boruc,frey,

cb:richards,lucio,

midfield:yaya,diego,diego capel,ben arfa,zidan,kaka*

forward:villa,benzema,eto'o*

im not a big fan of mexes..we need a physical presence at the back.n he must be fast n solid.

i believe we do haf problems thru the wings..so i think we need effective true wingers not makeshift players n hopefully hleb n flatusso wil stay.

as for the striking force,i would love to see eto'o play up front with ade.RVP is injury proned and when he gets back,he needs more time to adapt with the arsenal style of playing.villa seems to be a clever player and a proven goalscorer.we'll see..

offload:bendtner,lehmann,hoyte.

vela will be back,he's a sure talent..lets hope he brings us something to cheer about next season.goonerss forr lifee!!!

+ give captaincy to toure or fabregas

I would really like to see david villa sign for arsenal. sell mad jens and eboue.

tony adams should be brought back to the grove to sure up the defensive line.

a winger and a defender would do it for me.

Posted by: suicidalsam | April 26, 2008 10:12 AM

SELL:
Lehmann; Flamini, Hleb (if they insist).

Keep for another season:
Eboue (as Sagna's understudy), Senderos (4th choice behind Alexandre Song), Bendtner, Diaby, Justin Hoyte.

Promote:
Walcott (right wing).

BUY:
Heurelho Gomes, Benzema, Yaya Touré.

So the Team will be:
Gomes; Sagna, Kolo Touré, Gallas, Clichy; Walcott, Frabegas, Yaya Touré, Rosicky; Benzema, Eduardo. (Subs: Almunia; Eboue, Alexandre Song, Senderos; Denilson; Adebayor, Van Persie)

Those players are expensive they are great but expensive (Alex-Patto, David and Carlos Villa, Joaqin and Yaya). I think the real deal is young amazing player that dousn't cost much and could be shaped like Wenger loves to play, i'm talking about egyptian player play's at zamalek called Shikabala. he playes (RWF,LWF,SS) left legged who has great passing ability on and above the groundand great dribbling. Don't mind my English cause i don't use it much.

Posted by: simary | May 8, 2008 6:45 AM

all arsenal need is nasri, ben arfa, and yaya toure and we will be set.

Posted by: jay | May 14, 2008 2:02 AM

Shikabala is now the best player, he is even better than Zidan and he is more cheaper and younger. i'm one of Zamalek's fans but 4 years ago i became more addicted to arsenal more than my favorite team. And i really believed in Arsen when i saw Flamini when he was young and when he became no.1 in his position, so i really recommend Shikabala. P.s he is already the best player in Egypt though he didn't play in African cup

Posted by: Simary | May 22, 2008 5:30 PM

K Tourè Captain.

Senderos, Lehmann, G Silva, OUT

GK M.Neuer, CB V.Kompany, CM Ederson (The new Flamini), ST Marcelo Moreno (Cruziero)

Posted by: | June 3, 2008 4:07 PM

Artur Boruc(great goalkeeper and affordable)
David Villa(no explanation needed.if we dun get him, rivals will.)
Yaya Toure or Torsten Frings(great holding players)
Vincent Kompany(great defender who looks ferocious)

Will arsene visit this site?
