Can Arsenal outbid Juventus to keep hold of Mathieu Flamini?

According to various reports today, Italian giants Juventus have offered Gunners' midfielder Mathieu Flamini a deal worth about £17.5 million over five years to prise him away from North London.

Flamini can walk away from Arsenal on a Bosman-style free transfer next month if he doesn't get the kind of deal he wants to remain at the club, but if the rumour about Juve's offer is true, I don't see what the problem would be with Arsene Wenger holding on to his hard working star.

£17.5 million over five years works out to £3.5 million per year, or about £70,000 per week. There are players at Arsenal being paid more than that, but putting those arguments aside, even if Le Gaffer wanted to keep Flamini on about £50,000 per week, it would mean setting up some kind of agreement where the 24-year-old would get a £5 million signing-on fee, which would be far less than the club would have to pay to come up with a replacement.

Quite frankly, I'm getting sick fed up of Arsenal's players being linked with moves away from the club at the end of every season. Us fans had to endure it with Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry for years and now the same is happening with Alexander Hleb, Flamini and Cesc Fabregas. Getting Flamini to stay and sign an long extension to his contract might just help nip such speculation in the bud.

What do you think? Should Arsenal be matching Juve's offer? Or is £70k a week too much to pay for the Flamster's services? Share your thoughts here

Just to make it clear for the clubs interested, and the players in question, Arsenal should offer slightly less. If they go for the money: let them leave!

If they care less for the money (so more for the club, supporters, manager and way of playing football) they are welcome to sign for a slightly lower fee.

It won't be possible to outbid every fuc*ing club interested in any of Arsenals players within the next 100 years, so let's hope there are still loyal players that enjoy playing football for the most beautiful club in the world.

Have you heard of a think called a precedent!!!

Arsenal has its own precedent that there is a set wage bracket for every player! Arsenal has never changed it, and while people complain that they should do away with it etc etc, while they have a wage bracket Arsenal has the power. The moment AW gives in to a single wage demand, all the other players will start to think hey he was going to leave but then he started getting 70k a week, maybe i ll get my agent to start selling me off so i can negotiate a better deal!! And you have the pathetic result of Cashley cole almost pranging his car because of £5k less! Wanker!!

I for one believe no player should demand more than what the club is offering. The only reason some players look good is because of the way Arsenal plays!

I see that Adebayor's agent is now hawking him around the Italian clubs, so we can expect him to be unsettled too. Will he remember how miserable he was at his previous club, that he wasn't even turning up for training? Arsene has turned him into a class player but money talks, especially for agents who have only a limited time to get as much as they can out of 'their' players. However, these players should ask themselves if anybody can remember an Arsenal player who went on to be better elsewhere!

He had a phenomenal season, but does anyone think he'll be anywhere near as good without Cesc next to him?
