Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp applies for coaching badges

Among the things I have in common with Arsenal greats Charlie George and Patrick Vieira is that we all have opposable thumbs, we each have the club in our blood and we all agree that the best player ever to pull on an Arsenal top was Dennis Bergkamp.

The Iceman was a genius with a football and witnessing him play was a true privilege. The fact that he played for the Gunners made it all the more special, so I was delighted this week to read that Dennis has applied for his coaching badges.

The Dutch maestro still has an executive box at Emirates Stadium, so I'm hoping Arsenal might find a way to give him a role among the coaching staff at London Colney when he gets the proper certification. Surely having such a brilliant footballing mind among his staff would be a must for Arsene Wenger.

According to reports, however, Bergkamp is taking his Dutch coaching badges first, allowing him to work in De Eredivisie and speculation has it that he will join former international team mate Marco van Basten next season when he takes over at Ajax - the club where both men began their careers...

Given that Arsenal have opened talks with Ajax about a possible partnership, that's good news for those like me who are hopeful of Bergkamp returning to the Arsenal set up.

However, I'd advise you to think twice about taking up the bookies' offer of 16-1 that Dennis will take over from Arsene Wenger as manager, when he steps down. In principal I wouldn't be against that, but great players have a habit of becoming mediocre managers, so he'll have to prove himself worthy first.

Oh, and he'll also have to overcome his fear of flying, as I cannot see the Arsenal board of directors appointing a manager who is incapable of travelling to away games in Europe.

That said, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Dennis the best of luck in his coaching career, which I sincerely hope will bring him back to the Home Of Football in the not too distant future. If he were able to impart some of his genius to the young players at Arsenal, then we'd all benefit.

Have you got a favourite Dennis Bergkamp moment? Do you think the Iceman can cut it as a coach, of perhaps even a manager? Share your thoughts here, using our comments section below.
