Does Arsene Wenger need to rethink Arsenal's signing policy?

Within the space of a few days Arsenal's eight month reign as the Premier League pace setters has all but been forgotten as the team have slipped to third place in the table.

There's a school of thought that basically says that at the start of the season us Gooners might have been happy with that situation at this point of the season, but quite frankly I think that's bullshit.

Nobody can doubt that Arsene Wenger's team are one of the top four in the country, but being top four doesn't cut it - this is our third year without silverware and that just is not acceptible for a club the size and stature of Arsenal.

There's also a number of fans who argue that the team is in transition and that they should be allowed to grow organically, but how many years should we be prepared to wait? I'll tell you how many - none.

A club like Arsenal simply should not have transition seasons. The whole point of us leaving Highbury for our state-of-the-art new stadium was so that the club could rake in enough money to allow us to compete on the same level as the Manchester Uniteds, Chelseas, Milans and Real Madrids of this world. And that means buying proven world class players who can bring trophies to the club.

Unfortunately, we are but lowly fans. However, the lack of silverware might have the effect of making the corporate seats at Emirates Stadium slightly less appealing and if that happens, you can bet your bottom dollar that the club will get out the cheque book to sign a superstar who is capable of putting bums on seats.

And for anyone doubting my cynical approach, I ask you this: when have you ever heard Arsene Wenger talking about a potential signing? Never, that's when. Until this week, when in light of the defeat at Chelsea and all realistic chances of Arsenal winning the Premier League disappearing, Le Gaffer starts talking about Hatim Ben Arfa as a potential arrival in the summer.

That would be a start, but I'm hoping against hope that Le Boss will tap into that £70 million transfer budget and bring in four or five new faces, as one thing that has become clear in the past few weeks is that the Arsenal squad needs to have more depth, not just to cope with injuries, but also to allow the manager to drop players who are under achieving.

I'd love to hear from you lot who you think Arsenal should sign, but in the meantime lets hope that the summer will bring an end to the patient building process as the only option and that Wenger's policy can be enhanced through the addition of some world class experience when the team gathers to prepare for next season's campaign.

That is exactly what Jose Mourinho said as soon as he took over Chelsea. Arsenal is a great team , but has no depth. And you can't compete in 2 or 3 major competitions if you don't have an amazing 1st squad and an amazing bench.
I don't understand why Wenger is so stubborn.

I agree - I'm sick of transition seasons. We've played so well this season that to finish with nothing again will be frustrating. Wenger doesn't need to go mad and sign another 'Thierry', but someone with a bit of experience at the top of football would be helpful. I know people will point to the fact that we've played better since we got rid of our one 'superstar', but at this end of the season it's obvious that we need someone that talismanic to keep Arsenal going! And please find another captain, Gallas just doesn't cut it. Good defender, terrible leader.

gd articele. i think arsene needs to sign ben arfa along with quaresma and zapata and also Gai assulin who is 16 and playing at barcelona and is a gun

if arsene wants to strengthen his squad
first fing he needs to do is get rid of the 1s who aint rly done nyhting at the club

if i was the manager i wud get rid of

1.Eboue: awful player dives too much and to me he isnt rly a winger.

2. Bendtner: just hasnt shown to me tht he has the potential to become a gr8 player.

3. Gilberto silva: thnks for the service but he has to go, this season he has been way below average when hes been playing.

4. Fabianski: even tho he has only played in the carling cup games, his performance aswell has been bloody awful 5-1 performance against spurs was the worst bit of goalkeeping i have seen for ages.

Wenger needs to forget about 5 yrs time when our players have finally matured, we need superstars rite now, i'm tired of sayin "maybe nxt season we'll win summin".

also wats pissin me off this season is the amount of players saying their gonna leave becoz of the lack of games (e.g Diaby), if u aint gettin any games its becoz
A. ur shit

wht i thimk pf arsenal is that there playing style is catchy on the eyes but they are too short of great players ,what i think is that a player like BERBATOV will be the perfect player for arsenal what ronaldo is for manutd now a days,i think fabregas and adebayor are both over rated players i love arsenal fc i am a true fan but i think adebayor especially is too much over rated .berbatov is in an elite class a class you can compare to zidane ,ronaldhino.arsenal should get berbatov.

I for one 'am prepared to trust in Wenger and wait for success because the Boss has already said that the current crop of kids he has in the Academy are the best he has ever had. I would really like to see the club give our kids their chance afterall, what is the point of having a World Class Youth set-up if you are just churning out players for lower ranked teams? If Henri Lansbury, Nacer Barazite, Harvard Nortveit, Mark Randall, Kerrea Gilbert, Jay Simpson and Carlos Vela didn't promise so much, I'd be all for spending every penny of that 70mil war chest.

That being said I agree with the poster above. We need a clear out of the non-performers this off-season, namely, Justin Hoyte, Gilberto, Lehmann, Eboue, Bendtner and dare I say it Rosicky. Then, lets bring in about 3 decent players with proven ability, I prefer, Micah Richards, Ben Arfa and a decent striker, and give the Academy players I named above a chance to shine as well. The kids in the Academy know what it is to be patient and have served us well in the reserves so let them play all the Carling Cup games and then let them compete fairly for a place in the team for league games too. The problem we have of late is that there isn't enough competition for places and players like Adebayor have become complacent and lazy because they know Wenger has no option but to play them because we lack alternatives.

yes he needs to fiddle with the kiddies then concentrate on his rear guard. He can then have a chat with the supporters club who are all kiddie fiddlers

Posted by: Le Gay Gooner | March 27, 2008 4:15 PM

I believe all they lack is depth, a few more quality players on the bench could have perhaps propelled them through this current rough patch.

So yes he needs to dip into that transfer kitty...but he needs to buy quality, not someone to nurture along like so many of his recent purchases.

Apparently Wenger has said that he is unlikely to go splashing out in the summer when all he needs to do is raid the womens team.

arsenal will win it over liverpool to get a place in the semi finals of champions league.

Posted by: john | March 31, 2008 9:37 AM

this is in response to the first article. the biggest clubs in europe all go through transition phases. the premier league is so strong now the dominant team will change. look across europe at the champions over the past 3 or 4 seasons. we don't sign superstars we make them. no one has ever come to us with a huge reputation, why would wenger start now? the team have performed very well this season and its not over yet. no one gave us chance at the start of the season but we exceeded expectation an now we're supposed to be in crisis!! i do however think we need 3 or 4 more players. unless van persie or rosiscky can stay fit they need to go cause they're taking up a big space in the squad. i'd like to see benzema, ben arfa, silva and and couple more african unknowns!!

3 players should be signed
QUERASMA
BERBATOV
MARQUEZ from barcelona
