Your vote: Arsenal don't need to make January signings to win the league

A few short months ago, I don't think there were many Gooners who were not despairing at Arsenal's lack of signings after the departure of talismanic skipper Thierry Henry.

The pundits were not only writing off our potential as title challengers, but were also doubting that the Gunners, minus Titi, could even make it into the top four.

Indeed the only man who had unshaken belief in the team was Arsene Wenger. Never has the mantra, Arsene Knows, been more appropriate than the first half of this season. The club are still contenders in four competitions, are top of the Premier League and have shown that they have the fight to win in a variety of different scenarios.

And who did he buy in? Defensive midfielder Lassana Diarra, defender Bacary Sagna and striker Eduardo, as well as rookie goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Now Le Gaffer insists we don't need to buy anyone in the current transfer window to win the Premier League and it seems like you lot overwhelmingly agree...

In our survey, a whopping 85% of you stated that Arsenal can win the title without making signings, meaning just 15% believe we should invest in new talent to be in with a hope of winning the league.

For what it's worth, I side with the 85%: of course we have the ability to win the title with the players that we have. However, that doesn't mean that Arsenal should not be looking to introduce new blood in the transfer window - especially if certain players, such as Jens Lehmann, Lassana Diarra and Gilberto, are moved on.

I believe that with Alexandre Song unexpectedly called up by Cameroon for African Nations Cup duty, the likelihood of the Gunners needing a player with experience at centre back has grown immeasurably. If William Gallas picks up an injury within the next month, our defensive line could look shakey indeed and that could be the difference between winning the Premier League or finishing as an also-ran.

Personally, I believe Le Boss has a short list - a very short list at that - of names he'd like to bring to Arsenal to strengthen the squad. Most of those players will be unknown to the majority of us, but the point is that Wenger is now in the position, for possibly the first time in his career, to compete with the biggest clubs in the world to attract world class talent to Arsenal.

So, the bottom line is that if Arsene finds what he describes as a "super special" player, then we might see a new name on the team sheet by next month. If not, then we'll have to ignore what our rivals are doing and simply get on with the business of staying at the top of the table until the end of the season in May.
