Transfer deadline: Who should Arsene Wenger sign?

It's deadline day. The transfer window slams shut at midnight and despite Arsene Wenger stating that he's not looking to bring in any new faces, the rumours of Arsenal's interest in certain players continue.

If you read my opinions here often enough, you'll know that I think Le Gaffer should be spending some of the £70 million-plus kitty he has at his disposal to help bolster the squad for the run in to the Premier League and Champions League titles.

That seems unlikely, but with the few hours that remain, it would be good to hear from you lot about which positions on the park you think we need additional cover for - and, of course, any specific players that you have in mind.

To date, the only confirmed new signing has been that of 15-year-old Luke Freeman, a striker from Gillingham that Arsene thinks has a a lot of potential. But there have been a few murmurs coming out of the Gunners about other transfer targets...

Of the more unlikely speculation that is floating around is that Wenger is set to splash out £17 million on Barcelona playmaker Deco. The Nou Camp hero is reportedly looking for a new challenge, but I think it's highly unlikely that Le Boss is interested in bringing the 30-year-old to North London. Arsene has a policy of giving players who reach their 30s just a one-year contract, reviewed at the end of each season, so it's nonsense to think he'd pay £17 million for the privilege.

The prospect of Everton defender Joleon Lescott turning out in a Gunners shirt also seems doubtful after his manager David Moyes revealed that he is set to offer the player a contract extension.

But one rumour that perhaps does have some basis in truth is the club's interest in Bosnian international Edin Dzeko. The 21-year-old is currrently plying his trade for Wolfsburg - the same club linked with a move for Jens Lehmann last month.

And why should we give weight to the speculation? Simple, Wenger's right-hand man Boro Primorac has said that club have been tracking the youngster, who moved to Germany from FK Teplice last summer for an undisclosed fee.

Primorac very rarely gives interviews, so when he says anything, it usually heralds some kind of activity. The first team coach reportedly told journalists, "We have been following Edin Dzeko. He is a type of striker which can be a success in the Premier League. It is not certain at all if we capture him, but his performances have been better and better day by day. If you want to buy such player, you need plenty of money."

Another player that we might expect to see in Arsenal colours is French prodigy Yoan Gouffran, although if the whispers are correct, he won't arrive until the summer.

French Eurosport - which has a reputation as a reliable source - claim Arsenal have agreed a pre-contract deal which will see the 21-year-old Caen striker moving to London at the end of the season.

Gouffran was awarded the French Ligue 2 Player of the Season last year, when he was instrumental in winning Caen promotion to the top flight.

There are, of course, a whole swathe of young French players that Wenger is linked to signing. Most of them are billed as "the new Zidane", but as usual with Arsenal, the only time the club makes any comment about transfers is when the deal is done.

And there are a few hours left today for Arsene to make such comments...

The most important purchase that is needed is central defense!! What are we going to do rely on Senderos to plug holes when someone gets hurt or needs to go out on National duty. Lets face it, he is living on borrowed time right now and at any moment he is going to show why he does not belong at Arsenal much less the Premier League. We need a defender that can routinely rest Gallas and Toure….. Toure is human and Gallas is getting up there and injury prone. CENTRAL DEFENSE NOW
