Arsenal v Newcastle – A recent history

denilson.jpgArsenal host Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United in the FA Cup on Saturday and to get us in the mood, Arsenal Pies is taking a brief trip down memory lane and looking at how entertaining the Gunners have been to tomorrow's opponents, in the last couple of campaigns…

Two seasons ago:

The opening day of the 2005/06 campaign saw Arsenal beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Highbury thanks to late goals from new captain Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie.

The Gunners were donning commemorative redcurrant shirts and entering their first campaign in almost a decade without influential skipper Patrick Vieira.

Newcastle were forced to play most of the match with ten men after Jermaine Jenas saw red for a cynical foul on Gilberto just past the half-hour mark. Yet the ten men held tight until the 81st minute, when Charles N’Zogbia brought down Freddie Ljungberg in the box and Henry calmly converted from the spot.

Van Persie sealed the win five minutes later, with a deft near post finish past Shay Given.

Arsenal had begun their final season at Highbury in style.

Last season:

Newcastle travelled to Emirates Stadium for the very first time on November 18, 2006 to provide Arsenal’s tenth opponents at their high-tech new home. Unfortunately, the Magpies became the fifth team that season to leave with a point.

Arsenal were obviously still settling in at their new home and Henry was warming the bench as Kieron Dyer turned Manu Eboue on the edge of the area and curled a low shot past Jens.

But the French striker was eventually introduced and hauled us level with a stunning free-kick.

We began that game with very a strong looking side on paper - Lehmann, Eboue, Clichy, Gallas, Toure, Flamini, Fabregas, Hleb, Baptista, Adebayor and Van Persie – yet had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Earlier this season:

Saturday’s FA Cup clash provides a dress rehearsal for Tuesday’s Premier League meeting between the sides but Arsenal have already beaten Newcastle at Emirates Stadium this term.

Second half goals by Nicklas Bendtner and Denilson ensured Arsenal’s second-string progressed to the next round of the Carling Cup to face Sheffield United.
Portsmouth’s new recruit Lassana Diarra partnered Denilson in the middle of the park and enjoyed a fine game.

Alex Song was selected as a central defender for the first time and played alongside Philippe Senderos at the back.

But it was Bendtner who broke the deadlock with a powerful close-range header. Armand Traore provided the cross from the left and the teenage Dane rose highest to put the Gunners in front.

Denilson added a last-gasp second from the edge of the box with a stunning shot into the top corner.

Highly rated youngster Fran Merida made his first appearance at Emirates Stadium, replacing Eduardo very late on.
