Who’s visiting the butcher’s before Ashley Cole’s return?

Arsenal fans’ favourite former Gunner has done his best to ensure he endures a Luis Figo-like return to his former club by insisting, “it would be nice to go there and shut some people up”.

Ashley Cole, who left Arsenal in the summer of 2006 to join the Gunners’ loathed London ‘rivals’ Chelsea, returns to his former club for the first time on Sunday, December 16, for what will be the England international’s first-ever Emirates Stadium experience.

And what an experience it should be. When the Portuguese winger Luis Figo made the bold decision of abandoning Barcelona in favour of a world-record £37 million move to Real Madrid in 2000, his return to the Nou Camp resulted in the player being booed from first minute to last, subjected to the vilest terrace abuse and saw all sorts of things raining down at him from the stands. The most notable of which was a pig’s head. Labelled ‘Judas’ and sensibly afforded maximum security on the day, Figo emerged unscathed, at least physically that is.

On the only occasion Cole has actually faced Arsenal since his departure, in the league game at Stamford Bridge last term, the defender was goaded by the visiting Arsenal faithful and had fake twenty pound notes, with his face replacing that of the Queen’s, thrown at him.

But to rub salt in the wound, Cole clearly fouled Alex Hleb in the immediate build-up to their late equaliser. One nil Cole?

Sol Campbell also invited hostile receptions at Light Weight Lane when he left Spurs to fill his medal cabinet at Arsenal, winning the double in his first year at Highbury.

But at least Campbell could say he’d made a step up. It was a career-enhancing move. Can Cole say the same as he caresses his solitary Carling Cup medal, won without playing in the final?

Can he say the same as the Blues look up at Arsenal, a distant eight points away at the top of the Premier League table? Does he still view Cesc Fabregas as an unsuitable light-weight replacement for Patrick Vieira? Does he now wish he’d stayed put?

Either way, it doesn’t matter. We’ve moved onwards and upwards with his replacement Gael Clichy. So in a way, we should be thankful to Cole for inadvertently allowing Clichy to flourish. Thankful that he took his injuries and ego to a more suitable club. One where he fits in with his similarly ‘world-class’, ‘golden generation’ international colleagues.

That’s right, the ones who have the summer off next year while the rest of the continent enjoys Euro 2008.

Good move Ash.

How will YOU greet Ashley Cole at Emirates next month? What do you make of his vow to ‘shut some people up’? Post a comment and leave your thoughts on the matter below…

Don't you think its amazing that when Chelski played us at the Emirates last season Ca$hl£y happened to be "injured" and when they faced us in the Carling Cup Final he also happened to be "injured".

If he always seems to catch 'Shit-yourself- itus' before he comes within 100 metres of the smell of success coming from Emirates then I somehow doubt he'll being facing us on the 16th. Might come up with some stupid excuse like 'Ahh I pulled mt groin and can't play' when we all know that truth in that his mobile phone has got stuck up his arse
