Arsenal cruise into Carling Cup last eight

Arsenal strolled into the last eight of the Carling Cup with an embarrassingly dominant display at Sheffield United last night.

The home side were so second-best a home supporter threw his scarf at Blades’ manager Bryan Robson at fulltime.

But you couldn’t help feeling for the Manchester United legend as his side struggled to get hold of the ball let alone trouble the Arsenal rearguard with any meaningful form of attack.

The game actually began with Sheffield United looking more menacing with a couple of aerial balls contested unconvincingly by the Gunners’ defence. But that lasted all of a couple of minutes and after just eight, the Gunners were one up.

Nicklas Bendtner received a ball out from the back, spun and played in Eduardo some 25 yards from goal. The Brazilian-born Croatian peeled away from his marker, brought the ball under control before lashing a left-foot screamer beyond the United keeper and into the near top corner.

It was very reminiscent of a goal by Robbie Fowler at Manchester United some years ago when the bleached-haired Liverpool striker left United keeper Peter Schmeichel grasping at thin air with a ferocious left-foot strike which rocketed into the near-top corner. And just like Fowler in that game, Eduardo added a second.

It arrived after the interval when debutant Kieron Gibbs’ simple ball upfield split the United defence in two and Eduardo sauntered clear to make it two with as clinical a finish as they come.

Denilson’s deflected long-ranger later in the half added a sense of reality to the final score-line, as the Gunners toyed with their alarmingly downcast opponents for the vast majority of the ninety minutes.

Arsene Wenger believes his current crop are the best squad of players he’s had at his disposal since he took charge in North London and on last night’s evidence, who’s going to argue with him?
