Who’s the better left-back? Gael Clichy or Patrice Evra?

No fewer than FIVE Arsenal players were selected for the Les Bleus squad this week - yet arguably the best French Gunner of the lot this term has been overlooked.

Midfielder Mathieu Flamini has deservedly earned rave reviews for his performances so far and Bakary Sagna has made a seamless transition from Ligue 1 Auxerre to Premier League Arsenal.

New-boy Lassana Diarra looked accomplished on his full debut against Newcastle, Abou Diaby has ensured injury-prone Tomas Rosicky is barely missed on the left of midfield and our beloved captain William Gallas has been laid-up for the best part of the campaign.

Yet it’s Gael Clichy, the little genius zipping up and down our left-hand side, intercepting, tackling, playing one-two’s and generally performing heroically for the team, who is left out by France manager Raymond Domenech.

Unlike the other Arsenal players named, poor Gael has two established players in front of him for his favoured role -the left-back berth – Barcelona’s Eric Abidal and Patrice Evra of Man U.

Abidal can also play centrally in defence due to his height and strength but Evra and Clichy are very similar players.

Although, in my opinion, Clichy is easily the better of the two and is only omitted because the older Evra established a name for himself first.

But who would you rather have? Who is the better player? Tell us what YOU think…

It's probably better for Domenech to go with the established left-back right now, because it's crunch time for France and probably not the right time to take a risk.

Clichy is easily the better (or best) left back in the Premier League, but he's kind of an unknown quantity at the national level. I get the feeling in the next round of friendlies, Clichy will get a call up for France.

Evra's experience and attacking play gets the nod at the moment, but there's no doubting Clichy's potential. Evra played in the Champions League final 2004 and all the matches leading up to that, he has showed he can be trusted in the big games. Clichy's biggest match so far has been ???? Well he came on as a sub in the European Cup semi, but he was overlooked in favour of a player playing out of position for that game.

It's a close run thing obviously, but I think Evra gets the nod here. They're extremely similar players style-wise, but I think Evra is a marginally better defender and does deserve a shot based on seniority over Clichy at this point. (And I'm a Liverpool fan.) That being said, Clichy will star for the national side at some point--it's just that France is absolutely stacked at left back right now. Come to think of it, their entire squad is loaded.
