Villareal's Robert Pires comes out top over Barcelona's Thierry Henry

The battle of Arsenal’s old boys was won by Robert Pires at the weekend as his Villareal team ran out 3-1 winners over Thierry Henry’s Barcelona.

Neither player was on the scoresheet during Saturday’s game in Villareal, but Pires played a major role in the outcome and took time out after the game to point the finger at Barca for Titi’s poor start to the season.

While Henry was pretty much anonymous, Super Rob won his side two first-half penalties in a Man Of The Match performance. And he believes it’s only a matter of time before Henry gets back to his best, but only if Barcelona can adapt to get the best out of their summer signing.

And if you need proof of just how badly Henry is playing at the moment, another former Gunner, French flop Pascal Cygan, had Titi in his pocket for the majority of the game...

Speaking to journalists after the game, Pires said, "I believe that the players of Barcelona are not playing as they have to with Henry. They are not looking for him with the ball. He hardly touched the ball against us. He is a player that needs to be in possession.

"At Arsenal, when we had the ball we would look for him and at Barcelona that is just not happening. They both have to adapt to each other. Barcelona have to adapt, and Titi also, but he is a player who is very easy to play with."

The win elevated Villareal to second place in La Liga, leapfrogging Barcelona in the process.

The next test for Barca comes when they travel to Glasgow to take on Rangers in the Champions League tomorrow night. Early indications are that Henry may miss the game, however, as he apparently picked up an injury in the defeat at Villareal and faces a fitness test before the game at Ibrox.

Did you watch Pires and Henry in La Liga at the weekend? If so, what did you think of their performances? And do you think Thierry is now regretting his move to Spain?
