Mayor backs Arsenal bid to host 2011 UEFA Cup Final

London Mayor Ken Livingstone is behind Arsenal’s bid to host European club football’s second-tier showpiece – the UEFA Cup Final.

Livingstone has pledged over £100,000 to support a bid which also has the backing of the football association.

The Gunners’ state-of-the-art 60,000 all-seater Emirates Stadium is the envy of the continent and having already hosted two friendly internationals involving Brazil, Argentina and Portugal since it’s opening in the summer of 2006, it may provide the platform for a competitive final for the first time.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the club will learn later this week if it’s application has been successful. Seven other venues have also submitted applications and those short-listed will then host a ‘UEFA delegation’ who will conduct a venue assessment.

Considering the quality of facilities available at Emirates Stadium in every area imaginable, such an assessment would be passed with flying colours.

The final decision would then rest with UEFA’s executive committee who are expected to announce their choice by the end of March 2009.

Considering Arsenal themselves are more likely to be competing at the top table of the European game in the Champions League, if present form is anything to go by, then their bid sets up the intriguing possibility of Spurs bidding to win a Cup on Arsenal territory.

Having said that, there’s more chance of Middlesbrough getting to the final than Tottenham.
