Justin and Gavin Hoyte become Arsenal's 10th set of sibling players

The emergence of teenage defender Gavin Hoyte as one of Arsenal’s more promising youth team players throws up the intriguing situation where we might soon have a pair of brothers lining up for the first team.

Justin Hoyte has been a regular first team player for a couple of seasons now and the 22-year-old made 36 appearances for the club last season. He ended his year by signing a new long-term contract with Arsenal and younger brother Gavin made it a very happy family when he signed his first professional contract at the start of this season.

17-year-old Gavin was captain of the successful Under-18s team last season. He’s a speedy centre back, as opposed to Justin’s favoured position of right back, meaning that we could see them playing alongside each other in the Gunners back four.

Gavin made 12 starts for the Arsenal reserves last term and also helped the Under-18s to win their Academy League section, featuring on 23 occasions, as well as being one of the regular players who enjoyed a run to the FA Youth Cup semi-final.

The Hote brothers are the 10th pair of siblings to play in Arsenal colours and they have some memorable duos to follow in the footsteps of...

Robert and George Buist were the first brothers to play for the club back in the 19th century. Robert was at the club from 1891-94, while George joined the club later and was there from 1896-97.

They were followed by William and (1900-04) and Joseph (1901-04) Bradshaw.

Charles Satterthwaite (1904-10) scored Arsenal’s first ever goal in the first division when he netted against Wolves in September 1904. His brother Joe had a slightly shorter career, joining the club in 1906 and leaving in 1908.

David (1904-12) and Andrew (1908-09) Neave were the next siblings to play for the club, before Willis (1910-11) and Thomas (1911) Rippon continued the tradition.

The club’s most famous brothers were Leslie (1931-52) and Denis Compton (1932-50), who both played in the FA Cup winning team that defeated Liverpool in the 1950 FA Cup final. Both also played cricket for Middlesex, while Denis was a legendary cricketer for England.

Danny (1953-62) and Denis (1957-61) Clapton were local lads who fulfilled their childhood dreams by playing for their club.

Icelandic siblings Valur and Stefan Gislason both arrived at Highbury in 1996. Valur returned two years later to his former club Flam, where he became captain. Stefan left the year after he arrived and continued his career in Norway.

The most recent brothers to call themselves Gunners, prior to the Hoytes, were Tommy and Michael Black. Tommy was at the club from 1995-2000, before transferring to Crystal Palace. Michael pulled on an Arsenal shirt from 1992-1999, including a Champions League appearance against Panathinaikos in 1998, before departing for Tranmere Rovers.
