Is Nigerian youth sensation Macauley Christanus en route to Arsenal?

The one good thing about international breaks is that it gives us a chance to take a closer look at some of the players that we are being linked with in the next transfer window.

Now I realise that most of the ARSENAL SET TO MOVE FOR insert name here headlines are bogus, but once in a while we do stumble across some intriguing players where there might just be some truth to the speculation.

The criteria for these players, as per Arsene Wenger’s scouting system, usually follows along the lines of 1. Is the player still at school? 2. Have we actually heard of them before? 3. Are any other clubs tracking them? 4. Will they add something ‘super special’ to the Arsenal squad?

So try this name on for size - Macauley Christanus.

As you’ll see from our YouTube video, Christanus was prolific for the Nigerian team which triumphed in this summer’s Under-17 World Cup, scoring seven goals in seven games for the Golden Eaglets, as they are known. In the process, the six-foot striker collected the Golden Shoe as the tournament’s top scorer and the Silver Ball as the competition’s second best player (the Golden Ball was won by Germany’s Toni Kroos).

There’s good news and bad news about Christanus...

The bad news is that there are about a dozen clubs supposedly chasing Macauley’s signature, including the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, Ajax, Hamburg, Marseilles and, er, Tottenham Hopeless, according to the 17-year-old’s agent.

The good news? Christanus is an Arsenal fan. Not only that, but he’s confessed that his dream is to play for the Gunners.

He currently plies his trade at his hometown club, Abuja FC, but he is reportedly a free agent and is keen to move to the Premier League and in particular, Emirates Stadium.

Another pointer to Arsene Wenger’s reported interest is that Le Professor has a record of signing the Golden Shoe winner from the Under-17 World Cup - the last two winners were Carlos Vela in 2005 and Cesc Fabregas in 2003.

So have a look at the video and tell us what you think about Macauley Christanus. Do you think he would add something ‘super special’ to the Arsenal squad?

It's difficult to say obviously, but with RVP, Adebayor, Eduardo, Bendtner, Walcott and Vela still to come, it's hard to see where he'd fit in. Of course, if one of them should not make the grade and leave...
