Gibbs guides Arsenal to win over Chelsea

Arsenal reserves secured their third straight win in the Reserve League South as Kieran Gibbs’ only goal of the game secured all three points at Chelsea last night.

The result leaves the Gunners’ second-string a point behind leaders Aston Villa with 10 points from five fixtures this term.

Manager Neil Banfield spoke to Arsenal.com afterwards and was full of praise for his match-winner:

“Kieran has had a good game tonight. He has also just been called into the England Under-19s - he goes off tomorrow. He’s come back in to the side after his injury, played well for the team and scored a really great goal.”

This follows the left-winger’s first-team start against Inter Milan in the Emirates Cup during pre-season and the winning goal in last season’s FA Youth Cup semi final first-leg against Manchester United.

The most impressive thing about Gibbs' performance against the Italians was his willingness to keep it simple.

He received the ball and was always on the look-out for the simple pass. It was an extremely assured and competent display by a teenager suddenly thrust into first-team action against top European opposition. But he did well. And he did so again last night to leave us all wondering: “Can he make it Arsenal?”

I was hugely impressed by Ryan Smith [pictured] a couple of years ago - another fleet-footed left-winger - but in the end, the Islington-born winger was cut loose and now plays for Millwall having had spells at Derby and Leicester.

So will Kieron be another Ryan or will Gibbs be the new Giggs? What do you think? Have you seen him play? How highly do you rate him?
