Drogba: Ballack should have signed for Arsenal

After dropping the bombshell of his desire to depart Stamford Bridge and insisting Arsenal’s football is head and shoulders above that of Chelsea’s, Didier Drogba has now entered the debate over Michael Ballack – suggesting the Germany captain made the wrong decision in joining the Blues.

Last week, the Ivory Coast striker was quoted by respected French publication L’Equipe as saying Chelsea were a ‘broken’ club following the unexpected departure of manager Jose Mourinho. He also insisted he had wanted to leave the club since his very first day in London and that ‘nothing’ would stop him from leaving now.

Yesterday, I wrote about his lavish lauding of Arsene Wenger’s Young Guns and the, albeit tongue-in-cheek, suggestion that Chelsea main man might harbour secret fantasies of a switch to Emirates Stadium.

Now the former Marseille star has weighed in on the bizarre circumstances which saw Ballack, a 2002 Champions League finalist with Bayer Leverkusen, omitted from Chelsea’s Champions League squad for the entire Group Phase, despite nearing a return to full fitness.

“I’m convinced he would have had an easier time at Manchester United or Arsenal,” he is quoted as saying in The Sun.

“They benefit from their well-balanced team – he would have been a better fit there.

“Here we depend on our individuals so maybe Chelsea is not the right club for Ballack.

Of the German’s absence from the Blues’ European squad, Drogba hinted at behind-the-scenes upheaval by offering:

“His experience and strength in the air makes him indispensable. But I don’t know what happened between him and the front office.”

As if he hadn’t already said more than enough for him to incur the wrath of Chelsea fans, Drogba then admitted he is jealous of teams who, unlike Chelsea, focus on attack.

“I do admire players like Frank Ribery or Luca Toni. In Germany, they play offensively.”

Having listed both Milanese clubs: AC and Inter, alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona and former club Marseille as his favoured destinations after Chelsea, the striker has evidently now added Germany and Bayern Munich to his wish-list. And if you like to read between the lines, perhaps Arsenal too. Except with the latter, he realises there’s more chance of a Mourinho return to the Bridge than him ever sporting the red and white of the Premier League pace-setters.
