Could Samir Nasri be on his way to Arsenal?

If the newspapers are to be believed, then Arene Wenger is set to go head-to-head with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez in a £10 million battle to try to lure Olympic Marseilles midfielder Samir Nasri to the Premier League.

Now, I have my doubts about Arsenal’s interest, but I’ll get to that in a minute, after I’ve detailed the player’s credentials.

As the above video from YouTube shows, Nasri is a strong attacking midfielder, whom, aged just 20, is often referred to as the “new Zinedine Zidane”, although this probably has more to do with his upbringing in Marseilles than anything else.

At five feet nine inches (1.77 metres), he’s not the tallest player in the world, but what he lacks in height, he makes up for in skill, as he’s one of the best midfielders in France at the moment and last year was voted the Young Player of the Year in the top division.

He has been involved in the French national set up for a long time, progressing through the Under-16s, 17s, 18s, 19s and 21s and this year won promotion to the full national squad, to which he has been called up three times, scoring once against Georgia to secure the points for France in their Euro 2008 qualifier, four months ago.

In his international appearances at other levels, Nasri has scored 21 goals in 54 games, but he’s not quite as prolific at club level, where his tally is just four in 62 games...

Now, if Arsene Wenger is truly interested in Nasri, I believe the youngster would favour Arsenal over any other club, given our strong French connections and Le Gaffer’s reputation for promoting young talent to the first team set up. The same cannot be said for Senor Rotation Benitez, nor for Inter Milan, who are reportedly also keen on Nasri.

We all know that Arsene has an encyclopedic knowledge of world football, but of French football in particular, so if he was interested in Nasri, I believe he would have made his move years ago.

The other problem I have with this particular transfer rumour is just exactly where Nasri would slot into the team. We aren’t exactly lacking in attacking midfielders and Wenger has gone on the record time and time again in saying he only buys players who he believes can add something special to his squad.

On the other hand, if Le Prof is plotting to offload one or two players, then I could see an opening emerging for Nasri. Given the way the squad as a whole is gelling right now, I can’t see Wenger being keen to begin breaking it up.

Oh, and one final point: Samir Nasri is a name we’ve all heard of. Experience should tell us all that Arsene Wenger very rarely brings a player to Arsenal, without prompting us all to Google the name to find out who the hell we’ve signed.

looks like a vaery vary good, promising player. and if we did get him i think we would play him out wide or possibly up front behind rvp (remember adebayors gone to the African cup). anyway i wouldnt like to see us let go such a promising player and i would hate to see him go to liverpool

Yup, it will be great if he plays for Arsenal, since a few Asenal player will play for African Cup and huge transfer money available.

I still think he needs to improve in his finishing skill even his pace and dribble is world class

Nasri is a fantastic player. Im a marseille supporter and i love arsenal in the premier league. I would be over the moon if he signed with arsenal. hopefully wenger buys him, he is still very young and is a strong attacking player.

samir nasri will slot in pretty well into arsenal especially with his technique suiting the squad. i am pretty sure he will move to arsenal because after wathcing liverpool loose to marseille he will probably hate the type of footballing they are playing and same goes with intermilan so he is left with the one decision and thats playing under the genuis coach of arsene wenger who will make a star out of him and improve him techniqually..................... hopefully he moves to REAL MADRID following in zidanes footstep

nasri could only be a good addition to the profs already young fiery squad.the french link will definitely add to possibilities of the move.
