Could Cesc Fabregas win the Player of the Year Award?

I know that it’s very early in the season, but the form of Cesc Fabregas already has people talking about him being one of the favourites to lift the Football Writers’ Association footballer of the year award.

If the Spaniard playmaker can maintain his current form, it’ll be hard for the scribes to see past him for the accolade, meaning that he could become the youngest player ever to win the award.

If he does pick up the award, he will become only the sixth Gunner ever to win the prestigious prize.

Thierry Henry was the last player to win the award when he made it a hat-trick of wins in 2006, having previously won in 2003 and 2004.

The club’s first winner was Joe Mercer in 1950. As club captain, he led the team to FA Cup victory in the same year and in all helped the Gunners win three league championships. He remains the only English Arsenal player to win the writers’ award...

The next to lift the prize was another skipper, Frank McLintock. The Scottish midfielder collected the award in 1971, the same year in which he led the club to our first ever league and cup double.

My favourite ever Gunner, Dennis Bergkamp, capped an incredible season by winning the writers’ votes in 1998, having helped inspire the club to our second double. The same season he became the only player ever to win first, second and third in Match of the Day's Goal of the Month competition, for a hat trick against Leicester City.

Frenchman Robert Pires won the vote in 2002, a season in which he scored nine Premier League goals and provided 15 assists to help the club win another league and cup double. The nod from the sports hacks was all the more remarkable given that Pires missed the final two months of the season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in a match against Newcastle United.

Lets hope that Cesc can keep on impressing the football writers and perhaps inspire the team to pick up some silverware of its own by the end of the current campaign.
