Chelsea’s want-away Drog: Arsenal are above us all

Little murmurs of praise have begun emanating from way down the Premier League table as seventh-placed Chelsea’s unsettled star striker Didier Drogba suggests Arsenal are streets ahead of all their rivals this year.

The powerhouse Ivory Coast captain has been a thorn in the side of the Gunners, or more specifically, Philippe Senderos in recent years but has seen enough of Arsene Wenger’s troops to admit the Blues’ may be fighting a losing battle to regain the Premier League crown.

“When you look at this season in terms of the Premier League, it doesn't look so good at the moment,” Drogba is quoted as saying in The Daily Mail.

“Because Arsenal are head and shoulders above us all and totally in charge of their football.

The £24 million signing from Marseille didn’t stop there. Oh no. He went on to point out that Arsenal were playing great football last year too. It’s just the inevitable results our football promised for so long have finally begun to follow.

“The threat from Arsenal to all the other sides who think they might have the title in their sights is that they were already a team which played great football but we can all see that they are both more mature and more effective now than they were before.”

And to clear up any lingering doubts over the Gunners’ superiority over their west London ‘rivals’, Drogba illustrated his belief that Arsenal are in a league of their own when he said:

"Even though I expect Chelsea to be capable of winning the league, I have to elevate Arsenal to the top group of favourites for the title because of the way they are performing right now.”

Excuse me if this sounds a little forward but are we missing something here? William Gallas was regarded by a couple of Chelsea season-ticket holders I know, as their outstanding individual of the 2005-06 campaign. Yet he decided to jump ship and join Arsenal the following year. Then earlier this year, arguably the Blues’ most promising young talent, Lassana Diarra, did likewise.

After this charm offensive, what chance the Drog declares his undying love for north London and Arsenal and says he wants to join London’s biggest club?

It's nice to see us getting a bit of respect from fellow players. We have started really well but we have got a couple of tough fixtures in the next few weeks so lets see where we are after those - by the way I wouldn't mind seeing Drogba in an Arsenal shirt

Drogba's an outstanding talent and it's nice to see him offer praise for the Arsenal. However, Chelsea spend 24 million pounds to get him and he's at the top of his game. I can't see the Professor splurging on a striker, even one as consistent as Drogba, when our strike force is putting the in left and right. Van Persie's injury hurts, but with Cese and Hleb (and now, good news, Rosicky) putting them in from midfield, and Theo coming on strong, a goalscorer is not at the top of the list.
