Wenger plays down world beating tag by insisting there is still room for improvement

Arsene Wenger is anxious to prevent his team becoming over-confident and is wisely urging his young stars to keep their feet on the ground.

We’ve all seen it before; Arsenal put together a great run of results, but then suffer one defeat, then another, as the bubble bursts and the players don’t react in the right way.

So Le Boss is hammering the message home that we are not indestructable, that we can still improve and that the players have to maintain their focus to avoid slipping up.
“To start well in the championship and to start well against Sevilla is nearly perfect, because we [have only] dropped two points,” Wenger told the press after last night’s victory. “Overall I am very happy with the spirit, our display, and tonight we played against a very good side. We were maybe a little bit lucky on the first goal but overall in the second half I thought we controlled well the game up to 2-0, after Sevilla came back."

And, as with most of us, Arsene felt that the final result was a bit flattering. “But it is like that when you are 2-0 up with five minutes to go, you know that Sevilla has to come out and you have a chance to score a third goal. But overall we didn't concede and we looked more mature tactically for 90 minutes than one year ago."

However, urging caution, Le Gaffer also pointed to areas in Arsenal’s game where we can get better...

"We have to keep our feet on the ground and believe we can improve in a lot of areas,” he said. “We lost balls we shouldn't have lost, we were one or two times defensively not clean enough, so we can improve in all areas - but there is a real spirit in the team and that's fantastic to see."

Singling out some of his players for special mentions, Arsene paid tribute to the workrate of his fellow Frenchman, Mathieu Flamini. The No.16 has, in my opinion, become one of Arsenal’s most important squad players. He’s got as terrific engine - a bit like a Gallic Ray Parlour.

And Le Prof of course commented on the continuing form of Cesc Fabregas. “It shows you as well how much confidence plays a part in the game because last year he couldn't score and suddenly he doesn't stop scoring. I knew it was in him but the confidence now allowed him to play - he looks as well stronger physically to resist the challenge if you compare with one year or two years ago, he's much stronger in the fight."
