Programme notes: Wenger eyes Champions League success

Arsene Wenger’s programme notes on Wednesday night hinted at some of the hunger Le Gaffer still has in pushing his team toward the top.

He wrote, “As these are my first programme notes since I signed my contract extension, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me so far in my job at Arsenal.

“First of all I mean the fans who have always trusted me since I arrived 11 years ago. Also the board and everyone inside the club.”

With typical grace, he added, “I want to thank my staff as well because although I am always the voice that comes out of the club, believe me there are a lot of people who work just a much as me, seven days a week, who you don’t hear about as much. So I want to take this opportunity to thank them because I worry that people think it is just down to me, but I have a very good team of people here with me.”

And Arsene made it clear that he believes his current team are capable of lifting the biggest prize in European football...

“The one thing that is missing from my time here so far of course is the Champions League trophy,” said Le Boss. “We were half an hour away from it two years ago, so hopefully we can find that extra half hour difference this season!”

Wenger failed to give any insight into his thoughts about Derby’s visit tomorrow, but he did speak about his team’s “magnificent mental strength” in coming from behind to spank the Spuds last weekend.

“It’s always significant to win at Tottenham because the game has such an importance for everyone who loves the Club. Also, until you win that first away game of the season you question yourself. Will we be strong enough?” he wrote. “It can set the tone for your away campaign because until you get that first win, people can try to make a problem of it.”

The Frenchman warns though that it is too early to start thinking that the team has already developed enough to win the Premier League. But he is impressed with the players’ team spirit and ability to turn adversity into winning situations.

“We have been confronted with difficult situations in every game and we have overcome them very well,” stated Arsene. “That’s why I’m convinced that we just have to continue with our same belief and togetherness, and the rest we can deal with.”

And with the win at Light Weight Lane obviously delighting the manager as much as it did us Gooners, with typical Wenger humour he concluded, “I trust you all enjoyed yourself on Saturday.”

Nice one Arsene. That’s almost as good as his tongue-in-cheek assault on Chelsea’s paltry home support the other night when he wryly suggested the next board should extend the Emirates Stadium by building “100,000 on the roof”
