Lehmann out of the reckoning for North London derby?

Looks like we’ll be banking on the skills of Manuel Almunia in goal for the derby at Light Weight Lane this weekend.

According to reports, Jens Lehmann will be rested by Germany tomorrow in their friendly with Romania, because he has aggravated an elbow injury that he picked up in his nation’s 2-0 over Wales in Cardiff last weekend. Timo Hildebrand will slip on the Germany No.1 strip as a result.

That almost certainly rules Mad Jens out of the squad that will face Tottenham Hopeless on Saturday. It also give Spaniard stopper Almunia a chance to answer Lehmann’s observation that he has never won a big game for Arsenal.

And German coach Joachim Low appears to have backed up Arsene Wenger’s claim that Lehmann was not fully fit when he was dropped by Arsenal. "Jens had a problem before the game, and even more so afterwards so he can rest for the next two or three days,” said Low.

Let’s hope that Almunia can silence his Arsenal team mate by keeping a clean sheet against the Spuds. If he does, then the big German could find it difficult to reclaim his first choice status. But I believe the fiercer the competition gets between our goalkeepers, the better it will be for the team.
