Arsene Wenger names Carling Cup squad

Arsene Wenger this morning named his squad for tonight’s Carling Cup tie against Newcastle United, but for anyone looking to see a throng of new faces, you might be disappointed.

Le Gaffer’s 16-man squad includes just five players who have yet to enjoy a first team debut, but with two of those being the goalkeepers, we’ll see at least one new player tonight - summer signing Lukasz Fabianski.

Perhaps mindful of our Premier League opposition, Wenger may also be looking to give some of his senior players more time on the pitch and Le Boss today told Arsenal TV Online that he wants his youngsters to go one better than last year by winning the competition.

“We have a sold out stadium and we want to [let] our supporters see some players they know less well.” said Arsene, but showing his belief in his so-called second string, he added, "We would like to [emulate last year's run] and win it this year."

It looks like we’ll be seeing a new striking partnership too, and one that I’m really looking forward to seeing as it could be a winning combination...

Wenger is anxious to give Eduardo more experience in the English game and it’s likely he’ll partner Nicklas Bendtner (pictured) up front.

“Bendtner needs to add some aspects to his game and he will be a world class striker - I’m convinced,” said Wenger. “If he really wants to, he will be and he has already made a big improvement since the start of the season. He needs to work and be patient. Four strikers is a minimum for a season, but I consider him to be one of the four.”

And we may even get the chance to see a pair of brothers gracing the park this evening for the Gunners, as Justin Hoyte’s younger sibling Gavin has been named in the 16-man squad.

The full squad is:

Abou Diaby, Phillipe Senderos, Lassana Diarra, Eduardo, Denilson, Alexandre Song, Lukasz Fabianski, Nicklas Bendtner, Emmanuel Eboue, Armand Traore, Justin Hoyte, Theo Walcott, Henri Lansbury, Vito Mannone, Gavin Hoyte and Fran Merida.
