Arsenal leave it late to sign Lassana Diarra from Chelsea

On Tuesday, I wrote how The Daily Mail had suggested Arsenal would sign Chelsea’s want-away young midfielder Lassana Diarra.

Since then, there were no further stories confirming or denying the deal. Then late last night, with the transfer window about to close until January, Diarra finally made the switch across London, predictably, on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

Depending on who you believe, the fee was set at either £2m or £4m for a player who was in the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

As I mentioned last week, having seen Diarra play on a number of occasions – both live and on television – we have bagged a player with immense potential. But crucially, also one with plenty of Premier League and Champions League experience despite his relatively tender years.

Add to that the fact Diarra can operate with ease at right-back as well as his favoured central midfield position and the signing already looks like another astute Arsene Wenger purchase.

Emmanuel Eboue and Kolo Toure will be heading to the African Cup of Nations in the new year and you would have thought Diarra’s arrival will help the team through that period. He will of course be challenging for a regular start – something he never achieved at Chelsea – although some may argue it was not for lack of talent.

With Arsenal only having three centre halves, at least until January, and one of those, William Gallas already out injured, Diarra may get an opportunity in Arsenal’s first-team sooner than he would have hoped for. Gilberto can fill in alongside Toure as against Manchester City last weekend leaving Diarra to battle with Denilson and Mathieu Flamini for the ‘anchor’ role in the centre of the park. How Flamini feels about his compatriot’s arrival is anyone’s guess.

But what do you make of Diarra’s defection. Is it a good move for him? Is it a good move for Arsenal? Are Chelsea guilty of not appreciating the 22-year-old’s talents? Let us know YOUR thoughts.

Comments

Wenger should have bought a central defender and a winger. We have enough central midfielders allready, and are clearly short of defenders. Like a lot of Gooners I regularly wonder why Wenger let Djourou go.
