Will Arsenal surprise us with a transfer deadline signing?

August 31st. Transfer deadline day. With Arsenal having safely qualified for the group stages of the Champions League, there’s just a chance that Arsene Wenger might just dip into the kitty to bring a new face into the dressing room.

The guaranteed millions that the Champions League brings the club perhaps will loosen the purse strings a little. Even David Dein’s Red & White announcement yesterday, might help by prompting the board into some last minute prodding of Le Boss to deliver some good news to the supporters.

Wenger has stated time and again over the past couple of weeks that he’s not in the transfer market at the moment, so we only have a few hours to wait to see if he’s a man of his word, or whether he’s had an ace up his sleeve all this time.

My guess is that we won’t sign anyone. Arsene Wenger is a huge believer in preparation and I believe if he did have a specific target in mind, then that player would have joined the Gunners in the pre-season alongside other new boys Bacary Sagna and Eduardo. Mind you, last season's deadline day saw the departure of Cashley Cole and the arrival of skipper William Gallas...

But Arsene believes that you cannot bring in too many new faces, as that could upset the balance of the team, so I think this could be a frustrating day for us Gooners as we watch other clubs secure last minute buys to bolster their squads.

On the flip side, Wenger has also stated that he would only sign “super super players” and the one thing the looming transfer window does is unsettle certain players, who, perhaps, would relish the opportunity of playing for a team that has qualified for 10 back-to-back Champions League campaigns.

Whether Wenger would want such a player who is ready to jump ship so easily, is another question.

Nonetheless, the newspapers are still linking us with a number of names on deadline day. Those players include Fenerbahce midfielder Stephen Appiah, Brazilian prodigy Neymar and Man City’s Micah Richards, among others.

Of course, we are also still waiting on the biggest signing of the summer - Arsene himself. Earlier this summer Wenger hinted that he would make a decision on his future by the end of August. Then last week, Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said we could expect news within a week or so. But all Le Boss has said recently when asked is that there will be an announcement “soon” and that he would come out with a statement when he is ready. Could soon be today?

What do you think? Will you be disappointed if we don’t sign anyone before the transfer window closes? Which positions do you think Arsenal need better coverage for? Or is the present crop of players good enough to challenge for the Premier League title and Champions League glory? Share your views using our comments section below
