Wenger threatens Real action

According to the News of the World, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has threatened to take Real Madrid to court over their alleged tapping up of Cesc Fabregas.

Our Spanish wonderkid told a couple of media outlets he'd held meetings with Real Madrid representatives, but Wenger claims he did not allow the classy midfielder to speaker to anybody, saying: "His agent may have spoken to Real, but they are not entitled to make an approach to the player without permission."

The Spain international signed an eight-year deal tying him to Arsenal until 2014, but Wenger is fuming Los Blancos have made an approach through unofficial channels. The French boss stormed: "I don't find it fair for another club to talk to a player with such a long contract without even consulting you."

He continued: "You expect other clubs to behave in a fair way when you have players under contract."

This won't come as a surprise to anyone familiar with Real Madrid's transfer techniques from recent years. The nine-time European Cup winners tried and failed to snare Patrick Vieira from us in the same way, and used similar tricks when they successfully landed David Beckham and Ruud Van Nistelrooy from Manchester United.

Should UEFA step in and clamp down on these illegal dirty tricks? Do you think Cesc will stay for the duration of his contract or will he be gone if Arsenal continue to finish trophy-less? Give us your thoughts below...

I think UEFA should be coming down hard on this kind of behaviour. Real have been doing it for ages, but that doesn't make it any more acceptable. The rules are there for a reason. If Real don't like it, they need to suggest a new law in the appropriate way.

As to Cesc seeing out the duration of his contract - I don't think we can realistically expect him to stay that long. He'll stick with us for at least a couple more years, but I'm sure he'll want to go back to Spain at some point. When he does that will probably depend on our results to some extent, but then he has an enourmous stake in those results too. It's all a rich tapestry, you see . . .

PS. Come on Sunderland - get it in you, Spurs.
