Wenger close to signing three-year Arsenal extension?

We can all put away the migraine pills. It looks as though Le Prof is warming up the ink for his quill ahead of signing a contract extension that should keep him at Arsenal until 2011 at least.

In the true traditions of journalism, I’m not entirely sure where the story first broke, but other more reputable organisations contend it was the Daily Star, so I’ll go along with that as well. Mind you, it wouldn’t have been my first selection as chairman Peter Hill-Wood’s newspaper of choice. No offence Star writers, but you know what I mean.

Anyhoo, talking about the negotiations to persuade Arsene Wenger to stay, the chairman said, “Hopefully we'll have something to say in the next week or so.”

So that’s conclusive then. He staying for another three years and pocketing nine million quid while he’s at it. Well, that’s what all the other papers are telling us.

But hang on. Hill-Wood had more to say. "The length of the contract is up to him but hopefully it will be a two or three-year deal.”

And for those of you who thought the coffers were dry, he added, “We certainly want to pay him what he's worth. But money is not the major stumbling block - there are just little pieces here and there to sort out."

With any luck then, we can expect a press conference sometime in the next week - maybe before the Champions League qualifier with Sparta Prague next Wednesday. My bet is that it’ll be announced on the Friday before our game against Portsmouth on 2nd September, so that the Dubaibury crowd will have something to sing about prior to kick-off. That would also fit in with Wenger's earlier assertion that he wanted to sort everything out by the end of August.

If the story does turn out to be true and there is no seasonal opt-out clause, there will be many a happy Gooner breathing a sigh of relief. With the exception of Man Utd, I can’t think of any other Premiership club who sees their manager as their prize asset. We’re all quickly getting over the loss of Thierry Henry, but Wenger leaving North London doesn’t bear thinking about, as the exodus of talent that might follow would be devastating.

Perhaps one of the things we can expect Arsene to do in the next few years is appoint someone he sees as a worthy successor, allowing Le Prof to step up to the director of football role when his contract expires.

I’m racking my brain to come up with any suitable candidates, but I’ve no doubt that Arsene will already have people in mind who he think would suit the Arsenal mould and who would be willing to carry on his philosophy of attractive attacking football

What do you lot think? Is there anyone who springs to mind that might be a potential replacement for the most successful manager in Arsenal's history? Or are we all resigned to dreading the dark day when Arsene Wenger decides he’s had enough? Post your views via our comments section below
