Is it time for Le Boss to splash the cash?

I don’t like to blow my own trumpet; honest, I don’t, but unlike the Arsenal I managed to make it three-in-three – by correctly predicting the weekend score that is.

You’ve probably already read enough about the game; butterfinger Jens, Blackburn’s aggressive style of play, our new-found spirit, Gallas’ injury, bookings and sendings-off etc, so I won’t delve into it too much.

Certainly, I’d have taken a draw before the game so while we really should have taken maximum points, a 1-1 draw was not a bad result.

The worst thing to come from the game though was the groin injury that William Gallas picked up. The early prognosis was that he’d be out for three weeks but the injury now seems a lot worse than at first thought and it seems that Gallas will be out of action for at least SIX weeks.

Speaking to L’Equipe Gallas himself said, “You will not see me again until October. It is a bad blow, it is always difficult to accept, but now I have to rest."
Even before this injury blow we were already short of central defenders following the nonsensical decision to allow Johan Djourou to join Birmingham City on loan until January. Now we only have two centre backs with a modicum of experience to choose from for the foreseeable future, which quite frankly is ludicrous for a Club like Arsenal.

Yes, I suppose there is cover as Justin Hoyte, Bacary Sagna and Gilberto can all play in the middle of defence, while if things got really bad Le Boss could dip into the reserves and call upon the likes Gavin Hoyte and Havard Nordtveit.

This is hardly ideal is it? And what happens should either Kolo Toure of Philippe Senderos pick up a knock in the next few weeks? It really doesn’t bare thinking about.

The situation on the left flank of midfield is even worse. With Tomas Rosicky injured, Kieran Gibbs is the only natural left-sided player in the squad. It’s laughable.

Le Boss can fudge it like he usually does when Tomas is injured by playing someone out of position – Abou Diaby, Mathieu Flamini, Denilson Alex Hleb and Theo Walcott filled in last season – but again it’s far from ideal. We’ve lacked any sort of penetration down the left side when one of the central midfielders have played there while Alex Hleb and Theo look completely lost when they’ve been shunted out left.

I find it hard to take Le Boss’ comments here seriously given the obvious deficiencies in the squad. He must know we are a few players light in specific positions and a spate of injuries like last year could be devastating.

Lots of names have been mentioned (mainly creative/wide midfielders and strikers – see Modric, Anelka, Martins, Quaresma et al) and I’d like to think/hope that we are in the market for the odd player, especially a left winger.

I don’t think there’ll be any immediate movement, especially as prices tend to fall as the transfer deadline gets closer, which is why there’s always such a flurry of activity on the last day.

Last year on deadline day we swapped Cashley for Gallas and bought in Denilson. A similar level of activity would not go amiss this year.

Am I right? Do you think the squad needs strengthening? Who would you like to see us sign? Leave your thoughts below.
