Has Steve Sidwell waved goodbye to his career?

Despite there being plenty to talk about, what with it being the day after our first Champions League action of the new campaign, it seems only appropriate to pause for a second and spare a thought for our former FA Youth Cup winning captain, Steve Sidwell.

Having left the Marble Halls of Highbury with the words of Le Boss still ringing in his ears “I hope I’ll sign you back one day”, Siddy worked hard at his game to lead Reading into the top-flight, enjoying a solid first full season in the Premier League last term.

This summer, with Arsenal evidently not interested in re-signing the flame-haired midfielder, Sidwell joined our rivals Chelsea, hoping to make it big and take that next step up in class. Only a small step up mind.

Then comes his full debut. Away at the club he’s just left – Reading. And what happens? Mourinho hauls him off at halftime with his side losing 1-0, clearly doing wonder’s for the boy’s confidence.

It’s far too early of course, to say if Siddy will be more than a bench-warmer for Mourinho’s men. But when you look at how much football Shaun Wright-Phillips has played, his move may prove a step back rather than two forward for a once promising career.

Do you think Sidwell will establish himself as a regular starter or rot in the reserves? Let us know what YOU think…

He probably just needs to time to settle into Chelsea's squad. He was the center of Reading's attack last season, but he wasn't in the same side as Essien and Lampard. Once he finds his niche, he'll do fine.
